Students expect a college degree to immediately boost their career prospects and earning potential. What they might not realize is that the right degree will help them advance their career for years to come.

That’s the case with Lynn Fried, who points to the business management education she obtained in Keuka College’s Evening Online program nearly a decade ago as among the factors that helped her take the helm of a regional workforce development agency.

Keuka College’s Evening and Online program is designed to work as a non-traditional educational experience. With one four-hour, in-person class per week, we completed other assignments remotely or online. Keuka College’s adult college degree program worked very well for my work and parental needs.

Not only did her business degree qualify her for her new duties as executive director of the Finger Lakes Workforce Investment Board (FLWIB), Lynn, a member of the Class of 2012, says the experience informs how she performs those duties.

“Workforce development heavily includes training and educational experiences, so I am able to draw directly on my experience as an adult learner in the work field and continue on in this career,” she says of the Keuka College business management program.

The FLWIB was already familiar to Lynn, as she began her career in workforce development through the Nursing Bridge program at Finger Lakes Community College (FLCC).

“By partnering with FLWIB, and working with industry partners in areas such as healthcare and advanced manufacturing, we ensured the programs designed met employer skill needs, and job-seekers gained employable workplace skills,” says Lynn, who has assisted with workforce development programs across New York state.

After leaving FLCC, Lynn continued her partnership with the FLWIB as the regional director of the Rochester/Genesee Valley Workforce Development Institute (WDI). There was no doubt she knew the ins and outs of her job. But she says taking classes at Keuka College filled in all of the blanks she needed to move on in her career.

Not just any college could have positioned her for this challenging new opportunity.

As a mother of active high schoolers who is also a busy professional, Lynn knows that time management is crucial. So when she decided to return to school, she needed a program that would work around her already demanding schedule.

“Keuka College’s Evening and Online program is designed to work as a non-traditional educational experience,” says Lynn. “With one four-hour, in-person class per week, we completed other assignments remotely or online. Keuka College’s adult college degree program worked very well for my work and parental needs.”

The relationships she made with her Keuka College instructors, whom she says were “excellent and impactful teachers actively working as professionals in their field,” also helped Lynn, as did the program’s focus on professional writing skills.

Lynn says the Evening and Online program may have been “an intense 18 months,” but it was “worth it to earn my business degree.”

A degree that continues to pay dividends 10 years later.
